We live in a world full of tragedies, racism, discrimination, crime and so forth. As much as we know that it exists, the sad thing is that there is very little to do to stop it. Basically in today’s world it is impossible for it to be perfect. A utopian world is beyond reality. The novel The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver deals with injured and displaced people who experience healing. Turtle and Esteven and Esperenza have different lives, but they all have one thing in common, each of them faces some sort of injury, whether it may be a physical injury or an emotional injury. With their support and love for one another, they began a healing process.
Turtle experienced sexual, physical and emotional abuse in her first home. Taylor is given Turtle by a family member who recognized the dangers to Turtle in the present situation. She experienced this abuse in the biological home. Taylor is faced with full extent of Turtle’s injuries, at Dr. Pelinowsky’s office he tells her “Sometimes in an environment of physical or emotional deprivation a child will simply stop growing, although certain internal maturation does continue. It’s a condition we call failure to thrive” (Kingsolver, 123). When Turtle was first put on Taylor’s passenger seat, she had a very blank face. Through out the whole road trip, Turtle didn’t make any noise, she just started into space. During that period Turtle seemed to shut off. While Turtle was under the care of Taylor she began healing. She gradually started to talk and recognize certain things. Due to Taylor’s care giving for Turtle her condition, to thrive was reversed and Turtle began listening and learning like most young infants.
Esteven and Esperenza are displaced from their country, Guatemala, and are living in America illegally. They are emotionally hurt because their daughter, Ismene is taken away from them during a rally in Guatemala. Taylor receives news that Esperenza tried killing herself, but fortunately her...
