Marina Industry Analysis

I’ve decided to write my paper on the marina industry. I’m going to talk about how the aging population will be affecting the industry over the next few years. I’m also going to talk about how the task environment will affect the success of the industry.
We are expected to see positive trends in the marina industry over the next several years mainly due to demographics. In the United States the number of people between 45 and 64 years old will rise from 61 million in 2000 million to almost 79 million by 2010. This age group makes up the majority of the everyday boaters. People that own boats docked in a marina tend to be middle aged wealthy people. When people reach 45+ in age they tend to lean more towards a product that’s easy to use as opposed to the rugged speed boats. They also want a boat with more head room and entertaining space. Because of this the production of wider and longer boats will increase dramatically. This will change the way the marinas provide service to the boaters. A couple things that the marina will need to change are the size of there slips or docks and the size of their common spaces. Due to the demand for longer wider boats the docks in the marinas will need to be rebuilt to accommodate them. Because of the increased
population in the marinas the common spaces will need to be enlarged to provide adequate space for the visitors.
The upgrades to the marina are vary important to its success but are also very expensive. This is where bargaining comes into play. Suppliers can affect an industry through their ability to raise prices or reduce the quality of their product. A supplier group is powerful if the following apply. The service or product they supply is unique and substitutes are not readily available (e.g., underwater cementers for the new docks) If the purchasing industry buys only a small portion of the supplier group's goods and services and is unimportant to the success of the supplier.
