You will watch the video and respond to the questions below. You will apply key terms and information from chapters 4 – 6 in your responses.
Comment on both the Abner Louima and the Diallo shooting case (shot multiple times by officers). Discuss whether in your opinion you believe the police abused their power and/or was the shooting or use of force justified? Explain in detail.
- When it comes to the Abner Louima case the police officer deffinately abused his power, and on top of abusing his power he also sexually abused someone in my eyes. The police officer has a right to arrest but not the right to punish a citizen.
- Now about the Diallo case, for me there arent enough words to decribe how wrong the act of the police officers were. The whole point to have police offices are to protect, but if they are just going to kill innocent people we dont need them. The killing of an innocent citizen is never justified! Especially when the citizen is not armed!
Should officers receive psychological evaluations on a continuous basis (similar to drug screenings) while on the job? Why or why not?
- Yes they should due to how many of them turn out to slowly become drug addicts and very angry with life.
The fear of being labeled a tattletale is an American cultural phenomenon so strongly embedded in our national psyche as children that it taints our judgment as adults.
