Throughout an adolescent’s life, it’s common for them to encounter various obstacles. I can relate to these experiences because I was fortunate enough to overcome these difficulties through the support of the Boys Club of New York. The BCNY is a community based organization whose goals are to prevent young men from being exposed to the hardships of the street life. It also provides certain incentives that enable members to succeed and grow as individuals. I am thankful for the opportunities the Boys Club has provided me. In the summer of my junior year of high school, I was offered an internship with The United Nations through the help of the Educational Director of The Boys Club. With this internship, I was able to enhance my communication skills, expand my knowledge of the business world, and it also has given me a greater sense of responsibility because those above me have invested so much trust in me. These qualities that I have acquired through my internship will benefit me in my college experience. I am forever appreciative to the Boys Club because they are jump starting my career. My focus is to be a success, but furthermore to be recognized as the first college graduate of my family. The thing that I fear the most in life is failure. One person in my life who instilled this value was my grandmother. My grandmother has always encouraged me to move forward in life and to avoid disappointment at any cost. She stressed the importance and significance of education which gave me much motivation to not fall behind academically. She confided in me that the proudest moment of her life would be watching me walk down the isle with my cap and gown and being presented with a diploma that would recognize me as a college graduate. Personally, I feel the same sentiments that my grandmother has stressed. With this new mentality, I am confident that I will be a success.
