Global Warming: The Liberals and The NDP
Global Warming may be the most talked about subject in politics today. Greenhouse gas emissions in BC are estimated to be 35% higher than they were in 1990. The atmosphere has warmed more over the last 50 years than it has in the last 1000. The world has realized that the steadily changing climate is a real threat. Future consequences include increased melting of ice caps, a sever change in the oceans chemistry, drying lakes and streams and an overall change in climate. It is a growing crisis that many believe the government is overlooking, but in turn, the government insists they are putting extreme efforts on the subject. Action must be taken now, or the consequences will only become more severe.

The British Columbia Campbell Government has taken steps towards doing their part about the issue of global warming. During the dramatic "Throne Speech", the Campbell government pledged they will "act now, and will act deliberately." Gordon Campbell has set out a "BC Energy Plan" which they hope to fulfill in the long term. The plan focuses on providing education to businesses, land developers, home owners and others to help them be more energy efficient. Organizations, such as the Ministry of Energy, are conducting strategies in which to make more energy efficient buildings. They pledged to lower energy costs by $474 million and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.3 million tonnes by 2020. Furthermore, they pledged to cut down gas emissions by 33 % by 2020 and make BC energy self sufficient by 2016. These promises are a bit far-fetched, but are possible. With the follow-through of the BC Energy Plan, the Gordon Campbell Government could take British Columbia into the leading province of energy efficiency.
