The Impact Of Video Games
On Society Critical Study
The purpose of this study is to discuss the cultural aspects of video games as entertainment. Through studying computer and video games as media artefacts, an understanding of their places in the past, present and future society can be recognised. Other focuses in this essay will be presenting the main factors of cultural influence in gaming and ethical issues that are related to gaming as a medium.
The History of Computer Gaming
At present the progressively influential medium of computer gaming has existed for over half a century. Since the first computer game, games have become more and more complex, nowadays resulting in stunning, masterful works of art that serve as outstanding sources of entertainment.
The first concept of a computer game was devised in the year 1950 by Mr Claude Elwood Shannon in a paper he called “Programming a Computer for Ferranti computer." This paper considered the possibility that a computer could be programmed to play a game of chess against a human and even described how it would be done. The following year Feranti gave birth to NIMROD computer and was presented it at the Festival of Britain, the computer utilised a number of lights on its display to play a game of NIM. This was the first ever computer game and from then on obliviously triggered ideas that evolved the concept of play and gave birth to new ideas and concepts for gameplay and story. These then made computer based Tic-Tac-Toe possible, Mouse in the Maze. Then with concepts and ideas getting more interesting, Space War, the first ever shooter was developed a decade later.
Creativity had started to flow. Computer gaming since then has taken a leap forward, in the way stories are told, the way they play, different elements that are included and the technology that’s implemented.
