Energy Conservation
Introduction
Today we will talk about Energy Conservation; how it will save us money as homeowners, how we contribute to global warming, renewable and non-renewable resources, and what the government is doing and can do to positively affect the environment. For decades now, costs have been the main reason to save energy. For many Americans this was the only selling point to get them to conserve energy. This is due to the lack of understand and education of the public of how fossil fuels have adversely affected our health and environment. More recently I know y’all have seen the cause and effects of global warming. There is now much evidence that using fossil fuels like petroleum and coal play a primary and deciding role in global warming and climate changes.
Renewable vs. Nonrenewable
Much of our energy resources like; coal, natural gas, and oil are nonrenewable resources. This means once we use them up there will be none left to produce the energy we use. Again it comes back to cost. Many studies are and have been done on alternate energy source but they still prove to be too expensive. These sources are renewable and include but are not limited to; solar energy, geothermal, and wind power. Yeah, you’ve heard of these. Solar energy, when it comes to costs for an individual home owner, is our best alternative to help the environment. Today home solar energy kits are on the market and are costly. However, in many states, thanks to Energy Policy Act of 2005 the kits can almost be free. In addition to low or no electricity bill, if you produce more electricity than you use the electric company here is required by law to buy the excess from you.
What you can do to help the environment.
I know these solar energy kits can be an investment but there are many other things we can do as individuals to conserve energy. One would be installing energy star appliances in your home. I know some of...
