Gay Adoption, Right or Wrong?


The issue of gay adoption is a controversial one. On the one hand, opponents of gay rights say that married heterosexual couples make better parents than same-sex parents. On the other hand, there are many more children in the system awaiting adoption than heterosexual couples waiting to adopt. Are those opposed to gay adoption really looking after the well-being of children or are they using this avenue as a way to thwart homosexuals and further their own beliefs?
Those opposed to gay adoption base their opposition on several reasons. One argument is the belief that more harm will come to a child living with same-sex parents than if that child were to stay in the foster-care system. Some opponents even argue, “that gay men adopt to secure unfettered access to children they can molest” (Blakeslee, par 9). Because of these beliefs, many children are left without a place to call home. “The effect of excluding nontraditional placement resources through an overly narrow definition of family is that some children will languish longer in foster care without permanence” (Ryan, par 4). Another interesting fact is that “in 2002, over 129,000 children languished in the U.S. foster care system awaiting adoption by willing and able individuals” (Bradly, par 1). Many who are opposed to gay adoption say “the Bible condemns homosexuals”, but the Bible also says that “thou shall not judge” and “do unto others as you would like them to do unto you”. Should you be able to pick and choose which parts of the Bible to follow depending on what best suits your personal beliefs? Another argument against gay adoption is that homosexuals cannot procreate and this is nature’s way of saying it is wrong. Is nature saying the same thing about infertile women or sterile men? Just because you cannot physically produce a child does...
