Although technically I am from Houston, I grew up in a suburb called Clear Lake City. Clear Lake is located halfway between downtown Houston and Galveston Island. The Johnson Space Center is in Clear Lake and most of the economy here is dependent on the success of NASA. Even though my street address is Houston, the demographics of Clear Lake could not be more different. According to figures from the Clear Creek School District, sixty-three percent of the students in my old district are white, nine percent are African-American, seventeen percent Hispanic, and nine percent Asian. Ninety-three percent of the adult population of Clear Lake have at least a high school education and forty-five percent have at least a Bachelor’s degree (2008). These numbers reflect a lack of diversity not seen in surrounding areas of Houston.

Growing up in Houston, Texas, I have seen, and been aware of many different cultures. Over the past few years, White Americans have become the minority in Houston. We have seen a major increase in Hispanic immigration to our community. I do not think that this is a bad thing, but many people are questioning our border security. The reason for this is many of the Hispanic Americans are living here illegally. Some of this is caused by the government. The Government makes it very difficult and expensive for someone to become a United States citizen. Instead of spending most of their time trying to upgrade border security, I believe the government should work on helping these immigrants obtain citizenship and a better life. As long as the immigrants are law abiding, honest people then there should be no problem with them being in our community. Many people complain that they are coming to our city and stealing our jobs. This is true, but only because they are taking the jobs...
