In this project I am going to write about the way my community, Great Lever, uses ICT and the effects it has on the community. I will evaluate the different areas ICT is used for/in e.g. High Street Library. Great Lever is in the South of Bolton and is accessible from the M61. It is one of the most economically deprived areas in the UK. This is due to many people failing with their qualifications. In my area there are about 8000 people who have tried for qualifications and 50 % out of those have come out with no qualifications at all. No qualifications means unemployment or a low paid job, however just by taking an ICT course at the local family learning centre you can increase your chances of getting a better paid job. This is one of the ways that ICT can make my Area prosperous. Also half the people in my area are economically inactive (jobless).
The area I live in is packed with ethnic minorities and is multicultural, with all types of religions and languages. Out of about 13,000 people 4,900 are Christians, 5,200 are Muslims and about 1,200 are Hindus. There are loads of mosques, churches, community centres and there is also a small theatre.
Great Lever has generally poor health but has good access to local pharmacies.
List of technologies in my area:
• CCTV
• Speed Cameras
• Traffic lights
• ATM machines
• Bulletin boards
• Travel information and times.
• Internet accessibilities
Family Learning centre
The family learning centre is there for people of all backgrounds to attend and either take courses or to improve their English skills. It is run by the Bolton Literacy Trust and also has a crèche for children. They are funded by the national lottery and Lloyds TSB funding. The family learning centre has internet accessibility and also a bulletin board for events...
