Is it Ever Right to Break the Law?
Imagine that you get stuck in a situation where in order to save yourself or someone you love you must commit a crime. In my opinion there are certain aspects in life the make you want to break the law. People know whether it’s right or wrong or with whether they have to or not. In certain situations you may have to break the law in to save yourself, a loved one, or someone else who is in danger.
Every day in the United States five to eleven woman are killed each day by their abusive husbands. I think that a woman should be able to defend themselves. Self defense does not mean kill this person who is trying to hurt you but to do anything in your power to save yourself within reason. There are hundreds of woman in prison for killing their abusive male partners, but is it right to convict them for murder? Some women kill their significant others to save their children or another family member. Now they are not defending themselves but they are protecting their family. Under the law, that is considered murder, but should it be? In my opinion, women who protect themselves or their children from an abusive male partner should not be convicted for murder. They should be considered the victims. In most cases, the police have already been called at least once before these women kill their husbands and these woman and children have feared for their lives and the woman commit murder as their last resort. If a man is coming at me with a knife threatening to kill me I would do anything in my power to save myself and if that ends up killing the man I don’t think that I should be thrown in jail for murder. I could call the cops, but what if I don’t have enough time and they get there too late? So I believe that self defense from and abusive partner should not be considered a crime and in this sense you should be able to break the law.
