There is a place for Wal-Mart in our economy. As gas prices rise, the One-Stop-Shop benefit of something like a Super Wal-Mart becomes very attractive, but in that very aspect, customers would still shop at Wal-Mart even if the prices rose. Grocery stores all over the place carry house hold items, make-up, car care items, etc, because having a multi-faceted product offering, more customers come to your establishment and buy more items.

Wal-Marts should be allowed to open where ever they can, but should be held to much higher standards. Higher standards in wages would off set the undercover cost of operating Wal-Mart in lower income areas where the Wal-Mart pay check account for more than half of the family income. As well, if the prices rise, there will be less Wal-Mart’s, and less Wal-Mart employees, but those employees will be better off, and those not employed by Wal-Mart will find better jobs elsewhere. By offering slightly higher prices, and caring for employees, they as a company would be increasing the perceived value of the dollar by encouraging people to spend within their means and truly value their purchases, which would also decrease the frequency of replacing-over-repairing, thus lessening the burden on state funded waste management, and empowering our repairing-service industry, creating jobs and diversity in the economy.

Given, as a major employer in the domestic economy, as well as abroad, we must hold Wal-Mart to the highest standards when it comes to wages and benefits, only then could Wal-Mart be truly beneficial to the areas it occupies. Issues like child labor are appalling, for sure, however this is not the main dilemma with Wal-Mart’s hands off approach to doing business internationally with subcontractors.
