The interview process Kathryn McNeil engages in for the position of IBM product manager is the first problem in this case study which contributes to her eventual situation at hand. After being promoted to department director, Walters is given the task of interviewing candidates to fill her vacancy. Walters is impressed with McNeil’s previous work experience at IBM where she performed many of the same tasks in her eight years there that are required for the position of IBM product manager at Sayer. McNeil volunteers the information that she is a single mother who would be dealing with more than an hour commute from home. She is interested in the job hours so she can make child care arrangements as needed. Walters should have been very honest during the interview knowing first hand the long hours she worked in this job position with no lunches and seldom leaving before 8pm. Instead, Walters gives the official business hours of 9 to 5:30 and says they are not strictly a 9 to 5:30 operation. When asked to clarify the hours, Walters explains that overtime normally occurs two to three times a month for evening department meetings. The Carnegie Mellon website for Human Resources warns employers in their Guidelines for Interviewing not to “oversell your position” but to “provide an accurate portrayal of the duties and responsibilities of the job” when interviewing. They also state that employers must not ask about a candidate’s marital or family status but if an applicant asks for a reasonable accommodation during the interview to provide it. McNeil volunteers again that she is a single mother with a commute to work in her second interview with Foley. Foley tells her that work hours are 8:15 to 5:30 which is different than the hours Walters gave. McNeil agreed and even worked beyond these hours given to her at the interview and it still wasn’t enough.
