Here in the US the issue of illegal immigration is addressed with much frequency, but we almost never hear about the same problem overseas in the European Union. The European Union consists of every country west of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and Turkey with the exception of Switzerland, Norway, and the countries that make up former Yugoslavia. Recently the EU has been concerned with human trafficking whether it be by land, air, or water, illegal immigrant employment, and giving aid to illegal immigrants.
The EU wants to slow down illegal immigration by forming a border police and creating several checkpoints. In June of 2002 the EU implemented this pilot program and it succeeded in the detention of nearly 5,000 illegal immigrants, the seizure of nearly 1,000 false travel documents and the arrest of 34 human traffickers (BBC News). The European Commission’s plans for fighting human trafficking are developing coordination and cooperation mechanisms, promoting best practices in identifying and supporting victims, developing guidelines for data collection, and networking and involving international and non-governmental organizations (SCADPlus).
While the problem of illegal immigrants coming by land is slowly being dealt with, the problem of illegals coming in by air is still a big problem. The consensus is that most people who enter the EU illegally come not by land or sea, but by air at major European airports, often posing as tourists (BBC News). In Italy, they are attempting to pass legislation that would give authorities greater power to deport those who enter illegally. Italy plans on improving technology because according to Italy’s interior minister, a passport photo is no longer enough due to forgers.
As in America, the employment of illegal immigrants is also a pressing issue. In the EU, legislation has been enacted to help curb this growing problem. The percentage of companies being inspected annually has increased from 2% to...
