Effects of ADHD on Preschooler
Working in a Preschool, Mss. Mary often sees children with ‘problems’. Children often run around the room, not listening to her pleas, for them to sit still and listen to her directions. A lot of times, these problems are tracked back to the parents and poor parenting skills are blamed and defined as one of the reason for child’s indiscipline. One child, John in Mss. Mary’s class is considered as ‘problem child’. Mss. Mary has to often repeat his name over and over until he finally gains her attention. John is five years old and is very obstinate when it comes to doing what he is supposed to do. He is very talkative, aggressive, always in motion, lacks interest in activities and has very little attention span. One afternoon, Mss. Mary headed to Principal’s office and stated that John needs to be punished because he is continuously disrupting the whole class and stated that John’s behavior was reflection of his parents. Listening to Mss. Mary’s complains, principal set up guidance counseling with John and even called his mother called for the conference. In guidance counseling, she relieved that John is diagnosed with ADHD and needs to take Ritalin everyday.
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, is a condition involving excessive activity, inability to sustain attention, and deficiencies in impulsive control that are unusual for the child’s developmental level (Cook, Cook, 2005). Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationship with peers (NIMH). There are different factors that could lead to ADHD in the children. Research indicates that a certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters plays a main role for the cause of ADHD (Jaffe, Benedictis, Segal, 2007).
