As Singapore being a manufacturing country, it had to obtain raw or partially-manufactured products from regional and global market and exported products that are value-added back to these market partly due to its small domestic market. And it had been accounted that nearly two-fifth of Singapore’s merchandise export to the rest of the world came from the electronics products. Therefore Singapore had to improve on its transport and communication facilities in order for its manufactured value-added products to go global. This had explained the need for the development of Singapore port and air transport and services facilities to meet the high export demand.
Previously maritime trading activities takes place in the vicinity of Singapore River had being relocated to Jurong and Pasir Panjang as well as in Sembawang in the north. Today, the port operations in Singapore are handled by two players: PSA International (formerly the Port of Singapore Authority) and Jurong Port, which collectively operate six container terminals and three general-purpose terminals around Singapore. In 2005, Singapore had also been named as the world’s busiest hub for transhipment traffic and also the world’s biggest bunkering hub with 25 millions of tonnes sold in the same year.
In line with the development port facilities, Singapore had also improved the air transport and services. Around the 1970s, the new construction of a new airport was decided instead of expanding the old one at Paya Lebar. Since Changi Airport opening in 1981, it has made its mark in the aviation industry as a benchmark for service excellence, winning over 280 awards in a 20-year period from 1987 to 2007 and with 19 Best Airport awards won in 2007 alone.
