Representing Australia; Beneath The Clouds

I am analysing Beneath Clouds within context to ‘Representing Australia’, and the key components relating to the text such as prejudice, racism and colonialism in Australia. In particular I will research the effects that colonialism has had on the new generation of Indigenous Australians .

The text Beneath the Clouds; a journey of two teenagers in remote Australia, characters Lena and Vaughn are drawn together as their lives take the same path to Sydney. The debateable romantic relationship between the two is ambiguous, portraying an unspoken connection, with an approach toward aboriginal life, post colonialism, a colourful representation where I will also explore the effects of racism and prejudice from an adolescent standpoint.

My research will focus on the journey that illustrates what racial and societal effects are problematic for young Indigenous people in Australia today. Like in the film; Lena and Vaughn both seek another path to life - Lena wants to live with her father, and Vaughn wants to see his mother before she passes on. Beneath Clouds raises issues such as who are Indigenous Australians? I will explore many of the issues of identity that Indigenous people face, many Indigenous Australians have mixed heritage; Lena’s character in Beneath Clouds demonstrates the superficial archetypical supposition many people make when it comes racism.

I toyed with examples of colonialism and racism from other countries and the effects of, and present day outcomes of globalisation. However I felt I was getting to far away from the beautifully multifaceted relationship that Lena and Vaughn presented to us in Beneath Clouds, highlighting the complicated issues that our current day youth are subjected to in Australia today.
