Employees’ Union
Most of the employees in the United States have joined the Union. Unions have been created due to the fact that many believe companies exploit their employees and unions can voice the opinions of the employees and act on their best interest. The major function of the supervisor is to be the link between the union and the organization. Most organizations have contracts with the unions. The supervisor is responsible to be of the management’s interest, and at the same time make sure that the union fulfills their obligations.
Since the supervisors have dual responsibility, it is important to act in the best interest of both the employees and management in this situation. The supervisor should inform the management of the current situation and remind them of the contract. In the meantime, the supervisor should talk to the union and confirm the rumors. If the rumor is proven to be true, the supervisor should start the process of negotiation. It is important for the supervisor to build a relationship with the unions. The supervisor should also put the union at ease and assure them that as a supervisor, he/she will negotiate on the union’s behalf. Once the problem is clear, the supervisor should consult with the management. After discussing with the management about the issue, the supervisor can give out his/her view and opinion. The steward is one of the most important parts of the union; thus, the supervisor should also keep the steward informed.
It may be detrimental to the company’s interest if a strike occurs. Thus, the supervisor should work in the best interest of the management and build a relationship with the union at the same time. Being the peacemaker, will assure the supervisor’s responsibility to the union and the management at the same time.
