‘The Influence of the Family on the development of Individual Identity and Sense of Self’

Socialisation is a very powerful and significant learning device. The influence of the family on the development of individual identity and sense of self, largely contributes to the way we are, how we perceive things and our development. From the tiniest details to significant features, are all determined by the way each individual is raised, and the environment this is done in. The type of culture you are surrounded by and the era contributes greatly to this as well.

I personally think this topic is of high relevance to my Society course as it is of a subject each and every being can relate to. A person’s characteristics e.g. our birth order, our personalities, socioeconomic status, education etc. are developed within a family. By researching this topic I think it gives teenagers, like myself, a clearer and better perspective along with an understanding on how important the first years of childhood really impact on a human. With the variety of cultures and people in the world there’s no question why no family is identical. The family environment impacts socially, mentally and physically on a childhood upbringing. When a child is badly mistreated e.g. in a 60 minutes programme of a young girl called Oxana left to fend for herself amongst her feral dogs ultimately taking upon their characteristics. This resulted in future problems within not just herself but her family, friends and neighbouring households. This topic also contrasts the difference between the ways society is today compared to ‘olden’ days. Showing how people and their beliefs, rituals and ways of living, have changed over time.

Finally, I find this question rather interesting as it deals with the large differences and similarities between families in the same environments. Looking at how people develop on a micro level in within their families can help us interpret...
