Discipleship Counseling Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss three themes taken away from the book Discipleship Counseling by Neil T. Anderson. The three themes are: Jesus as the Wonderful Counselor, mental health according to the Bible, and the Steps to Freedom in Christ as a method to help all people suffering from mental illness. Discipleship Counseling Discipleship Counseling by Neil T. Anderson is a book that focuses on defining mental health from a wholistic standpoint as secular doctors/psychologists leave out the spiritual realm. The book is written to discuss the scope and limits of biblical integration and define mental health from a Christian perspective. Anderson defines the roles of the discipleship counselor and the counselee as well as God's role in therapy. He goes on to explain the steps of Freedom in Christ, which he explains is a tool that is supposed to help resolve root issues between people and God. It is based on biblical principles and truths as researched and studied by Anderson. This paper will discuss three themes taken from the book: Jesus, the wonderful counselor, the definition of mental illness according to the Bible and the Steps of Freedom in Christ. The first theme is that Jesus is used in the counseling session as the Wonderful Counselor. Christ is given authority in the Bible. Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a chid is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting father, the Prince of peace." Christ's authority is clearly stated in the Bible and Anderson uses this as a basis to use Christ's authority in the counseling sessions.
