Globalization has changed competitive conditions in many industries. The free trade and movement goods, people and money within globally integrated markets has led to important changes in the strategy, vision and mission of organisations; Emerging competitive markets, increasing cost pressure, and more demanding consumers are just a few other factors which impact the strategies of an organisation. Most multinational companies have already started responding to these market developments and manage to benefit greatly: with their international network of subsidiaries it is comparatively easy for them to find alternative suppliers with more competitive prices and high quality products. Large companies are also building international networks or supply possibilities, using new capabilities and efficiencies in a global market.(Aberdeen Group 2005)
This paper will examine the issues and opportunities of Global Sourcing and its impact on other profession and suggest changes and recommendations where possible to add value to the global sourcing process. Global sourcing has a long tradition. Its roots date back centuries when clever merchants traveled the world in order to discover new markets, which distinguished themselves through favorable cost structures and innovative products.(Unknown 2005)
Nowadays, irrespective of its size, no company can afford to refrain from global sourcing. The difference between developing countries and Western Europe, with respect to labour and material costs, is too big to ignore. Doing so is very dangerous, especially if your competition has already started global sourcing activities. If not, global sourcing is your chance to secure your company's competitive advantage for the future.(Mark Thompson 2005)
