Behavioral Learning Theory
When planning a lesson plan based on the principles of the Behavioral Theory of Learning, the teacher needs to consider that the student must be able to actively respond to the lesson with physical or emotional stimulus. Giving the child the chance to behave and changes in learning can be evaluated. Ways this can be implemented are through drills and practices, hands on learning, and tangible rewards.
In the Theory of Behavioral learning, learning is facilitated through the focus of stimuli and responses. Behavior change is how one learns with this theory. It is believed through this theory that everyone is born a blank slate, and as one is introduced to things, one learns. This is largely a result of environmental factors.
The teacher’s role in this learning process is to make sure the student has lots of manulapitives to work with. The teacher should provide lots of stimuli when teaching students. Providing a lot of experimental and trial and error type of activities rather than step-by-step instructions can help the student learn in a Behavioral way. In my personal experience after spending 10 years in the Special Education Field, I have found that the following aids in teaching through the behaviorist teaching model—all of the below answers are positive reinforcements, and help to motivate the students behavior in a positive way, encourages them to take chances and to try whether or not they may be answering correctly:
1. Smiling or nodding after a correct response.
2. Commending correctly done work.
3. Praise students ability to parents
Using modeling when teaching is also a way to implement the behavioral teaching model. By breaking the lesson down into concrete units or steps, a student develops a behavior that is organized and based on procedure. Cuing is another way to implement the behavioral teaching model.
