The City-state of Rome became a republic in 509 BC. Rome fought numerous battles to become what it was. It all started with the Punic wars. After they won, there was no stopping them. By the first century BC, Rome controlled most of the known world. With Augustus Caesar began the two centuries of the Pax Romana. During this time, all of Rome became a collection of states rather than conquered provinces. The rise of the Roman Empire had many contributors. One of the major factors would include strength in the Roman military. The Roman army was the largest of the group though. The army was at first only meant to defend the city of Rome but later set out to conquer, the Roman army was successful, and well organized. The army was reorganized into lightly armed troops who defended the border, and large mobile armies composed of troop. The border troops were given land to live on around forts they protected. This structure led to farming becoming the job of the border troops so that they could feed as well as protect those on the frontier. Joining the military service was a path to roman citizenship.

The roman army was the center of what made ancient Rome the greatest empire of it era, with it recruiting skills, and battle tactics is what made the roman army successful. What also made the roman army so successful and victorious was that they fought with pride, and offered reward for fighting with the army thing such as citizenship.
