The modern day cult classic, Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, is the film adaptation of a novel by the same name, written by Anthony Burgess in 1962. The title of the book, and the film, is derived from Anthony Burgess’ brilliant mind during his time while serving in the British Colonial Office in Malaysia. Burgess thought that the phrase could be employed as a pun to refer to a mechanically responsive (clockwork) human (orang, Malay for "man"). Orange is also a symbol the color of change between the heat of summer and the cool of winter. In keeping with its transitional appearance in nature, you could also use shades of orange to indicate a transition, or a bridge between two opposing factors.
The film’s main theme is undoubtedly the oppression of the government and the absence of humanity. The film often shows examples of how Alex does not seem to have any care in the world as to what others are feeling. He goes about his day as if what he is doing is the only right way to do things. Ultimately, Alex is the protagonist in the film, the government alternately, is the antagonist. With the governments antics of how to try to heal society of all its grievances, it has placed itself in the “bad guy” category automatically.
During the film, there is a substantial amount of color to indicate symbolism speckled throughout. The majority of the symbolism is between mechanical humans and those who were not, in other words, the government against the non conformists, most notably, the costumes of Alex DeLarge and his droogs, (meaning a “friend” or “buddy” in Russian) all wearing white, and anyone that works for an institution, for example, the doctors conducting Alex’s rehab and the prison minister, all wearing the color of oppression and institutions, grey.
