During Herbert Hoover's term in office the United States had entered the Great Depression. In 1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt took over the position as president of the United States when he defeated Herbert Hoover. Roosevelt promised the country he would end the depression. His plan to fix the country was called the New Deal. The goals of the New Deal were relief, recover, and reform.
The first goal of the New Deal was relief. Two days after being elected he closed all the banks in the United States. Problems with the banking systems were on of the reasons the country had gone into a depression. He would later open all banks that were functioning properly. Roosevelt needed an immediate way to get money to the people that needed it most. He would do this Federal Emergency Relief Association. The FERA would give assistance to all the people that needed it most. Federal Emergency Relief Program provided work to 20 million people that were unemployed. An important New Deal agency was the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC helped provide jobs by planting trees, build public parks ,and other ways of promoting environmental conservation. Two similar agencies of the New Deal were the Public Works Administration ( PWA) and The Civil Works Administration(CWA). The Public Works Administration gave $3.3 billion dollars to build roads, hospitals,dams, and bridges. The Civil Works Administration created jobs by fixing roads and bridges. The purpose of these plans were to provide work for the unemployed people of the United States. None of the jobs created by the CCC, PWA, or CWA were long term jobs because the government did not continue funding these agencies.
The next goal of the New Deal was recovery. To help recover FDR created the Agricultural Adjustment Act. Roosevelt taxed food processors gave the money to farmers for lowering their production of food. The decrease in supply increased the price of the food. Later the Supreme Court would find the AAA...
