Upon completion of reading about Alumina’s recent ethical dilemma and legal issues there were a few issues recognized in which I felt were important to discuss. It was evident by reports from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Alumina had been in violation of water contamination. The violation occurred five years previously, but had been since corrected. Alumina has been violation free since. According to their records, the company was in compliance and pollutants were below the agency’s standards. Alumina has high technology available to them to ensure they are always in compliance with the EPA’s standards.
In April, Kelly Bates alleged Alumina’s previous contamination of Lake Dira was the sole cause of the onset of Leukemia in her 10 year old daughter. Symptoms of such complications occurred five years ago directly aligning the time of the contamination caused by Alumina. She has gone to the local newspaper to draw attention to Alumina and is seeking punitive and compensatory damages from the company.
Being made aware of such allegations it is up to Alumina to protect their reputation and ensure their business continues to thrive. Alumina must do what it takes to make sure what they have worked many years to establish is not damaged. Losing business could be detrimental for Alumina if they do not address the ethical issues they are faced with.
Many stakeholders are involved in the dilemma Alumina is faced with. The company itself is a stakeholder along with its officers, managers, employees, and investors. A story of this caliber could potential harm Alumina’s business, cause frenzy in the community and cause great deal of other people to come forward with such allegations, threatening the livelihood of the company. Ms. Bates family are also stakeholders as well because Ms. Bates job is to protect her sick child and doing what it takes to ensure the company who has caused them pain and suffering pay.
