Racism In America

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."



These are the words of Dr. Martin Luther King in the year 1963 unfortunately, r acism in America and other countries is still very prevalent and we as people should not stand for it. This upsets me because I can't understand why people "hate" an ethnicity group. I live in America and since I was a little boy I was taught that it was a land of opportunity and our history books tried to depict the development of our environment. We made an effort to be "free from dictators and monarchies", we the people are supposed to decide on who we want to represent us as the head of our government.



The Jim Crow laws were abolished in the 1960's yet in this same country we are still separating ourselves by race. I almost feel as if people are just plain ignorant rather than "afraid of the unknown". The race card is pulled everyday and many people don't even realize that they are being racist. For example, when I came to the University of Connecticut many people looked at me funny as I walked throughout the campus. I would smile and say "hello" to everyone but I very rarely got a reply back, yet when people discovered that I was apart of the basketball team they began saying hi to me and asking to spend time with me. I ask myself all the time, "Was this an act of racism or just a case of unfriendly people"? (Since I'm from Georgia, I've been told that people in the north are cold and frigid) Then I remember many people wouldn't be open to engage in a conversation with 6'11 African American stranger.



In the year 1990, Peggy McIntosh created a list of the benefits of being Caucasian. She made assumptions about her race and stating why it was easier for her race to perform certain acts and how her race is at the top....
