EATING DISORDERS
For my extra credit community event paper I went to the Eating Disorders lecture. We learned many aspects of Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge eating. we learned the exact definitions of these disorders, What the warning signs are, Health issues, and how these disorders can be treated.
Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by self-imposed starvation and fear that you will become fat. These individuals won't eat no matter how weak, hungry, or thin they think they are. Losing weight is the most important thing to them and they will do whatever it takes to lose a few pounds. They never seem to be satisfied with their weight and their appearance.
Anorexia is usually found in teenage girls or in their young adult years. Anorexia usually happens when a major change happens in their life. This could be anything from a parent divorce or the start of their puberty. The warning signs to anorexia are usually their scarce eating habits, noticeable weight loss, absence of menstruation, extreme sensitivity to cold, extra body hair, digestive problems, extreme physical activity, social isolation, low self-esteem, denial of the problem, overuse of laxatives etc. From this list you can tell that anorexia is a serious problem and can effect the body in many ways.
The health issues that pertain to anorexia are long-term physical effects. If you are anorexia you might deal with your kidney, liver, heart, and brain shrinking. 25% of people with anorexia die. This is so disturbing because most of these deaths are young girls who just didn't like their physical looks. These individuals can develop kidney failure, irregular heart beat, and congestive heart failure. There are other medical complications that can occur. Anorexia is treated by going to counseling. There is individual counseling, group counseling, and family therapy. If the illness is getting too serious the individual will be hospitalized.
