Social Problems

Thoughts of confusion come to mind when concerning certain words such as: problem, program and policy. Provided below are definitions of all three as pertaining to human services. Problem - 1). source of perplexity, distress, or vexation. 2). difficult to deal with. Ex: Mary Sue continues to abuse drugs by taking medications that has not been prescribed to her. Her drug problem has become difficult to cope with. Program - 1). a plan or system under which action may be taken toward a goal. 2). to work out a sequence of operations to be performed. Ex: Due to Mary Sue’s drug addition being so difficult to lose she has decided to go into a 12 month rehabilitation program to provide her some sort of help. Policy - 1). a definite course or method of action selected from among alternatives and in light of given conditions to guide and determine present and future decisions. 2). high-level overall plan embracing the general goal and acceptable procedures. Ex: In this 12 month rehabilitation program certain policy rules that Mary Sue must abide by in order to successfully complete the program and achieve the goal of being drug free.
Social problems are very big issue in the United States as a whole. Five social problems that I believe are most critical for the U.S. to address are: 1). health issues, 2). illegal drug use, 3). dysfunctional families, 4). unemployment, and 5) lack of or no insurance. Health issues such as mental retardation, autism, cancer, and H.I.V. continue to control the lives of so many young people in today’s society. Illegal drug use continues to be a rising issue within both the young and old generation. People taking and overtaking medications that have not been prescribed to them causes so many lives to end. Dysfunctional families are another social problem that grows day-by-day. Whether it be divorce, drug additions, alcoholism, sexual abuse, or physical neglect so many families...
