Importance of Literacy
What is literacy? Well literacy is a way of understanding. According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, a literate person is when they are able to understand written information and also be able to adapt it within their society (Kirsch, 2007). Developing your own knowledge is so important when it comes to reading and understanding. Learning is an ongoing experience that will start at birth and continue until death. California is having a huge budget cut on their education systems. (California 17th District PTA, 2009). Class sizes are going up at a fifty eight percent rate. This makes it harder for children to learn on a more individual level. Teacher student communication is not as efficient as it was before because teachers have too many children to teach in short amount of time. Art programs have been cut by forty percent. Art is so important for children to express their thoughts and feelings. Another huge cut was the library and media center materials. Children need access to computers and reading materials’ in order to ensure that they get the best learning experience possible. The library and media center materials had a forty nine percent cut (capta.org, 2009). With all the budget cuts on our educational programs in California, what can be done to keep an ongoing and fun educational experience for our children? One great way to do this is by having a local community book festival. They are both fun and very rewarding to adults and children within the community. Even though there are a lot of steps that are taken when organizing a local community book festival, local book festivals are very beneficial to the community because it inspires our children to read as well as express themselves.
