“Freshmen! Freshmen! Freshmen!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. No matter how loud I sounded in the middle of the gym along with my classmates, the chanting of the upperclassmen overpowered our voices by saying boo. But that did not stop us. We continued to cheer as loud as we can and the sophomores tried to do the same but the most memorable moment is the intensity between the seniors and the juniors on the opposite side in seeing who was the loudest and who represented their class the best. It was awesome. The seniors all wore their blue and white shirt and showed their pride which motivated all the other classmen to do the same. Everyone was involved. For me, the seniors became the epitome (role model) of having school spirit and I could not wait to become a part of that.
Unfortunately it is not what I expected. I thought that the seniors were going to be the loudest but instead it was the juniors. The chanting and the spirit that was shown three years ago has changed. It is not the same. Not only was the rally affected by the change of spirit but the other activities were affected also.
Being the student body secretary, I have experienced first hand the results of not having enough school spirit. Myself and other officers have planned dances to raise funds for the school and at the same time give the students opportunities to participate and have fun. But we have received little participation. Out of 1700 students, 114 bought tickets for homecoming and 80 tickets for winterball which was cancelled because we needed at least 100. Obviously from the amount ticket sold, the motivation to be involved in school activities has greatly decline. There has to be a reason why at least 1600 students chose to not be a part of it.
In my opinion, it starts off with the leaders. For the dance plans, one of our officers did not even want to partake in an event that he/she planned. Leaders have to set example in participating and when they do not,...
