Silent waters
I woke up this morning with the strangest dream. I dreamt that I was juxtaposed in this mental asylum, locked up in this poorly- ventilated room, which by the way was haven for the mice. Mouth-watering victuals were miles away and probably only wishful, blurry and nice smelling little shapes to me. My reaction on gladly realizing that it was only a dream was one of plain relief, with smoky, indistinct touches of guilt. Relief, you could get why. And guilt, well you know that too. I write to extend the intricately designed web of emotions pertaining to the latter. Guilt was what that followed relief. It was what that made me realize that I owe it all to the vicious games of fate that life plays with each one of us, which also got me to be thankful to mine that decided ,that I be endured with the hell hole only as a dream. It had me moved immensely. It got me into thinking about it all day. Just what if it weren’t a dream? What if I really had to wake up one morning and not find the solace I always do in my mother’s arms? What if I had to go to bed (well, in this context; a ragged little piece of quilt) every night with no zest, whatsoever to face the next days’ sunshine? Worse, what if all I had to do was wait for death to come to me…?
Deepa Mehta’s Oscar- nominated movie, ‘Water’ is a larger version of my little nightmare. If you were to read the aforementioned, say a couple of months ago, minus the Oscar- nomination part, you would not have bothered to read further, funny how a 5 – letter word plays mind games with us. It is that very word that grabs us by the knees. If words were uniformly evaluated as money, then I guess the very word “Oscar “would be a million- dollar one to us Indians. In my defence; raise your hand if you did not know what “water” was until you were told that it was nominated to the Oscars.
