“Child of Rage” & “Scared Silent”
A severely unattached child is a child that has been abused or neglected, has been separated from their caregiver, inconsistent or inappropriate parenting, exposure to alcohol or drugs, and has been a witness or victim of violence. Severely unattached children cannot trust others, tends to lie, and cannot identify or verbalize their feelings. The thing that causes Catherine to have this problem is her childhood. When she was little she had lost her mother to leukemia and never really got to know her. Also her father sexually and verbally abused her. The last reason is because she was moved from foster home to foster home, so that had a major impact on her as well.
The characteristics of a severely unattached child are that of those which I listed in the previous paragraph. Such as; cannot trust others, tends to lie, and cannot identify or verbalize their feelings. Examples or experiences that can cause the characteristics of a severely unattached child are abuse, neglect or abandonment, adoption or foster care, multiple changes in daycare providers, painful illness or prolonged hospitalization, separation from caregiver (divorce, prison, death, serious illness), inconsistent or inappropriate parenting, exposure to alcohol or drugs, trauma while still in the womb, maternal depression, substance abuse or other psychological illness, parent with attachment disorder, or being a witness or victim of violence.
The type of therapy used on Catherine was a very straight to the source kind of therapy, but I think it was the right kind and the only kind that would work. What the psychologist and her parents did was lay her down on their lap and hold her down tight. They started talking to her and taunting her so that she would remember her past and bring out all that anger that’s been built up inside her. When it came out they would keep her there so that she would calm down and by doing that she would “kill” her...
