High school students find reading Shakespeare a confusing and frustrating experience, especially since most of us find little emotional connection with poetry written many years ago in a totally obscure language. The use of Elizabethan language, complex characters, and plot lines, can make reading his plays challenging. Although this takes a little work to master Shakespeare’s language, full comprehension is within the grasps of all students. With a little common sense and a few guidelines, reading Shakespeare will come naturally.
First thing to making reading Shakespeare easier is to find and use a synopsis. This might sound like cheating, but it is valuable to understanding the play. Synopses are written to provide just enough information for the reader. So it would be best for one to examine and read through the synopsis carefully to understand the plot of the play before you start reading the play itself. And while doing this, keep track of plot points and major characters once you explore into the actual text. Also, identify general themes, setting, and history surrounding the play’s production.
Another way for students to understand his plays easier would be for them to read the play out loud. Shakespeare’s lines were meant to be heard and spoken, not so much to be read. One might feel silly at first but they’ll be surprised how much this can clarify the language. They will begin to see what’s being emphasized. The words imply emotions, actions, and ideas that are difficult to notice from the text on paper. Speaking out loud can also make it clear who is speaking to whom. A good way to perform this is to try reading the text with someone else.
Furthermore, students should take their time reading through the play. When you come across passages you don’t understand, then you should go back and read them again. It’s a good idea to keep a pad handy and note any questions so they can look them up later. Likewise, reading the play...
