Why is it that I am portrayed as “the” sinner, a sinner who has committed a sin greater than ever in this known functioning world? I am no different than any one of the people living under this Puritan Society and I know for a fact, that we all share something in common; we are all guilty for our everyday sins. “ I was terror-stricken by the revelations that were thus made. What were they? Could they be other than the insidious whispers of the bad angel, who would fain have persuaded the struggling woman, as yet the only half victim, that the outward guise of purity was a but a lie, and that, if truth were everywhere to be shown, a scarlet letter would blaze forth on many a bosom besides mines. (Pg: 59)”

There was no triumphant individual in this debate, other than myself, Hester Prynne, of course. Those who speak otherwise have absolutely no sense of reality in their argument. Who is the true villain of the story? Nonetheless, it was certainly the Puritan Society. I lived the rest of my life as an outcast, an outcast in the supposedly “perfectly” molded world the Puritans have set for its people. Constantly being shunned at and gossiped about, I was in no way accepted by these people. The scarlet letter, the simple letter A, embroidered upon my breast could suddenly change my reputation and character. How ridiculous can one be for saying that I, Hester, chose to isolate myself? That is absolutely false and is nothing but an absurd remark to state. In what maternal universe, would I CHOSE to separate myself when I have the treasure of my world, Pearl by my side. Being punished by the Puritan Society, I did not want my own daughter to face the cruelty and scorn as I had. Because of the Puritan Society, my life had changed and my child, Pearl, was never able to have a normal childhood. Because of them!, I was pushed to face the menacing and repulsive human nature.

Was I the only one, the only human being guilty of adultery?...
