M.’ path to stardom proves what the human spirit can accomplish when relentless drive and determination converge with dreams. His long and arduous journey from construction worker to one of the most innovative artists is an inspiration to all who face obstacles and challenges along the road to success. Every time Michael hears “No, it can’t be done” he knows he’s close to success.
M was born in 1958, was the second of five children, his parents immigrated from Ireland in 1947 and settled in Chikago. Growing up in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood presented unique challenges for a boy of slight build and a discernible Irish accent. His father enrolled him in boxing lessons and Michael surpassed the lessons basic intent to teach self-defence and won a Golden Gloves Championship at 17.
But dance was in his blood. Michael’s parents were committed to retaining their children’s Irish heritage, so at 11 Michael was dragged by ears to the school of Irish dance. He was sent home because they said he was too old by Michael persisted because he couldn’t let a challenge go unanswered. Here Michael got the title of All-World Irish Dancing Contest. At that time he also became an All-Ireland Flute champion. His destiny and dreams began to merge.
Some time later Michael opened and closed an Irish Dance school. He decided to build an international career of professional Irish dancer. Michael gradually liberated Irish dance from generations of rigidity, incorporating arm movement and heart-stopping rhythm into tradidional steps. His innovative style moved and excited people in New York and Hollywood.
The Eurovision Song Contest perfomed by riverdance in 1994 made Flatley a star overnight. Still a year later Michael left the show to begin choreographing, producing and directing his own production Lord of the Dance. In 1996 Lord of the Dance premiered in Dublin.
