“Live pure, speak true, right and wrong, and follow the king.” This is the perfect model to be a knight for King Arthur’s court. Gareth from Idylls of The King was a great knight, but he couldn’t keep all the vows of Arthur’s court. Also, Gawain from Sir Gawain And The Green Knight failed to follow the model either. They tried to become perfect knights, but it was not easy to live pure, speak true, do distinguish right and wrong, and follow the king.
Gareth broke vows in the beginning of the story. He became a knight in a false way. Though he was the son of Bellicent who was sister of Arthur, and could be a knight right away, Gareth wanted to start from kitchen knave. Not only he did hide his identity, but also he gave low-class people false hope that they could be knights like Gareth. In this part, he failed to speak the truth. Also, Gareth was against the vows again when he was on the mission to save Lynette’s sister. He did not face his enemy with honesty, but he wore Lancelot’s clothes to fool the Night and Death knight. Gareth could not live his life pure, and speak the truth all the time, but he tried to become a perfect knight for Arthur’s court. He knew what is right and wrong. When he saw that scoundrels bully the weaker, he stood up, and tried to show justice. Also, he followed the king’s words; he fought with Morning star, Noonday sun, Evening star, Night and Death all by himself, and saved Lynette’s sister. At the same time, Gareth showed the bravery and power of King Arthur’s court to other knights.
Like Gareth, Gawain does his best to fit himself in vows, but he could not keep them either. He was brave in the beginning. Everyone in the castle was afraid to take the Green knight’s challenge, but Gawain took the danger to protect his king. After the bet with the Green Knight, he actually went on a journey to find the Green castle to keep the promise with the Green Knight. His behavior indicates that he made efforts to speak the...
