Discuss the clothing and its role in defining humanity. How have we too been stripped?
Clothing plays the role of covering up people. Clothing covers people’s embarrassments, secrets, regrets and confusions. It something that is used physically to cover everyone and once it is uncovered it reveals something and causes embarrassment. Like in the chapter Rashomon the character stripes the clothes of the lady who steals hair from the death for a living or else she would be starving. At the beginning of this character he is thinking about doing the same thing, about becoming a thieve. So once he realizes that he needs to the same he steals her clothing. Meaning that you must take advantage of others if you want to survive. So he took her clothing and left her naked. He reveals her truths and did not care about anyone else but himself. He only care about benefiting himself because he thought that, that is what one must do in order to be prosperous. One must overcome the inferior one in order to do so. Therefore he did that in seconds not acting in what is right but instead on what one must do in order to survive. So the significance of the stripping of the clothing was necessary. Its significance was that the clothing was the “food” or “life” to this character and must have done it in order to survive. He had to do it although he had second thoughts about it because that is what everyone was doing and if he didn’t wan anyone else to do it to him he had to do it. It was like a requirement because he robbed or he got robbed, so he had to decide which one was more convenient for him.
