In the opening of the story “A Father” described the morning routines of the main character Mr. Bhowmick and his wife. Also there is a description of Mr. Bhowmick’s preference to wake up early; he set his alarm clock for 5:45, in order “to accommodate a margin for accidents.” In this way the author shows the loyalty and alertness of Mr. Bhowmick: “He was a naturally dutiful, cautious man, and he set the alarm clock early enough to accommodate a margin for accidents.” Mr. Bhowmick worships Indian Kali Mata, the goddess of wrath and vengeance. He has the statue of the goddess in his bedroom, and he prays to it every morning; it shows the spiritual side of his character. Mr. Bhowmick’s wife is illustrated, by the author, as a caring and loving woman. She liked to get up early with her husband and cook him breakfast of a new version of French toast.
The story setting is a domestic and calm atmosphere. In the opening paragraphs the author introduces us to a family, whose members take care of each other, and seems that they are happy. The author established the point of view as a third-person narrator. The narrator uses a neutral omniscience to describe feelings and thoughts of Mr. Bhowmick and his wife. If the author did not use a neutral omniscience we would not know how Mrs. Bhowmick feels about getting up early and cooking for her husband, we could think that she is not a happy woman because she has to wake up at 5:45 to please her spouse by making him breakfast. From the author’s point of view we know that she actually liked to cook for Mr. Bhowmick before he went to work: “She didn’t really have to leave the house until 8:30, but she liked to get up early and cook him a big breakfast.”
Mr. Bhowmick is a very religious man, and it is important to us to understand the entire story. By telling us that Mr. Bhowmick is a very religious person the author gives us a thought that Mr. Bhowmick perhaps is not a man of modern and progressive ideas. Re-reading...
