All businesses need goals. They are the starting point for any organisation as they provide direction and allow the business to decide where it wants to be and how it will get there. However, goals are often very broad, for example the company may want to be the market leader by 2010. Once the business has decided its goal, it then needs to set objectives so that what the company needs to do in order to achieve that goal is clearly defined.

The main functions of a business are Human Resource Management (HRM), Production Management, Marketing Management and Finance Management.
The role of the HRM department is to deal with employees of the business, for example training and development, recruitment, productivity, motivation and “interaction” with trade unions etc.
The role of the Production Management department is to oversee all things to do with the production of the product, e.g. ensuring that there are enough raw materials stocked to complete the next order in time, quality control, choosing the manufacturing process etc.
The Marketing Management department is responsible for identifying markets, identifying the wants and needs of their markets, setting the price of the product, selling the product to customers or distributing the product through wholesalers etc.
The Finance department “raises, allocates and controls” the funds used by the organisation.

Although all of these areas are seemingly working to very different objectives, the objectives are all set by higher management to work towards the greater organisational goal. These areas may from time to time conflict with each other; for example if the marketing department wants to create a new advertising campaign but the finance department will not provide the budget. To the Marketing department it will seem as though the Finance department’s goals are in direct contradiction with their own, but this is not the case. The Finance...
