Fascism is an authoritarian political philosophy that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, and/or religious attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its essential parts: patriotism, nationalism, statism, militarism, totalitarianism, anti-communism,, populism, collectivism, autocracy and opposition to political and economic liberalism.


Fascism in Europe rose and spread quickly because of the ravages of World War I and the political and spiritual emptiness they had left behind. The Continent had been shaken by violent political and economic convulsions and in half of Europe the old conservative order had disappeared but a new one had not been accepted. The moral conviction of the world of yesterday had vanished, and the middle classes had soon become poor. To some, the last remainder of civilization seemed threatened by a new, mysterious, highly contagious occurrence - Bolshevism. Those who believed that a strong leadership and a new order were needed but who found Communism unacceptable in view of its internationalism.

Fascism was, above all, nationalist, exclusive, and anti-liberal. It was militarist, and whenever the country it occupied was sufficiently strong, it supported imperialism and territorial expansion

With the end of world War II fascism was defeated, but replaced in many parts of Europe and Asia with totalitarian communism.
