Most everyone thinks a veterinarian is just someone who takes care of animals in a clinic. This is wrong because veterinarians are considered vets from all sorts of fields, from the easiest professions like kennel owners and dog groomers to the more difficult ones like surgeons and farm vets. Doctors of veterinary medicine are medical professionals, whose responsibility is in protecting the health and care for animals and pets.
Becoming a veterinarian comes with many responsibilities. The job takes allot away from you like your family time and time for yourself. But at the end the job is rewarding in many ways.
If you love working and helping out animals then a veterinary job is a perfect fit, but there are a lot of responsibilities that come with it.
The nature of this job makes sure we have a safe food supply by making sure the food animals are healthy. Veterinarians also make sure the public is safe by treating the diseased animals. “Vets are involved in wildlife preservation and conservation, and use their knowledge to increase food production through genetics, animal feed production, and preventive medicine.” (Furguson Publishing Company.) In North America about 80% of vets have their own private clinical practice. But most known practice involves dogs, cats, and birds. Those are not the only animals vets take care of. Different types of vets treat different types of animals. But just about every animal can be seen by a vet.
“All states and the District of Columbia require that veterinarians be licensed to practice private clinical medicine. To obtain a license, applicants must have a doctor of veterinary medicine (D.V.M.) degree from an accredited or approved college of veterinary medicine. They must also pass one or more national examinations and examination in the state in which they apply to.” (Furguson Publishing Company.) So college is a big part in this career field.
