Capital Punishment

1. All human life is sacred is one of the Catechisms beliefs. It states that “Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being” (CCC2258). The Catechism also recognizes the following about capital punishment” Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being”(CCC 2267)
2. Because of the Catholic Church’s beliefs that all human life is sacred this is their position. All human life must be honored and respected. One of the ten commandments of the church is “You Shall not kill”, thus believing capital punishment is wrong.
3. The Church tells us that a human person’s first right is life. It does not belong to anyone but yourself. The intention is to “affirm our opposition to the use of the death penalty”, to examine the issue of capital punishment in the light of the fundamental moral and religious questions that it involves”. You have to honor the sanctity of human life. Catholics do not accept euthanasia, assisted suicide or abortion no matter the reason, because they are all a form of killing a human life. In like manner, Catholics should no accept capital punishment as a solution to a problem of murder or violence.
