“Cold Mountain” written by Charles Frazier is known as the sister work of “Gone with the Wind”. When reading that book, I’m moved to tears by the combination of strong feelings and the violence learning.
The story happens under the background of the Civil War. Because of the never-give-up love, the wounded soldier named Inman makes his way across the war-ravaged South, back to cold mountain, while Ada’ road is no easier as she relies on wits and newfound bravery to protect her father’s farm from attack, with the help of an intrepid drifter named Ruby. Inman faces trials and tribulations as he encounters slaves and bounty hunters, soldiers and witches, unexpected friends and dangerous enemies at every turn. Also Ada has learned how to be independent, how to survive in the wilderness, how to find more joy in everyday hard working. They all keep the longing for home after being in the wilderness, the longing for peace after the war, and the longing for love and union in the midst of chaos at every moment.
Although finally the sweet meeting don’t last for much time and Inman dies in the fight with other people, the perfect man will be in Ada’s and their daughter’s hearts all in their life. After all, everything will go away just like the wind, which is the same with the wars. The wheels of history will go forwards every minute while the time river will never flow backwards.
Having finished the book and the movie, I cried and thought a lot.
In our world, lots of people regard wars as the creature for the peace of our world. So there are always wars taking place in every corner on the earth such as the Iraq War and so on. But in “Cold Mountain”, wars are displayed as a bare crime. It’s just another glorious name for one person or a great many people to fight against another person or more people. No matter the person who dies is a good person or bad person , it’s still a big mistake that can’t be forgiven. At the same time it also talks...
