Madness
Emily Dickinson wrote, “Much Madness is divinest sense-“ in 1862, but it was not published till thirty years later. The poem consists of one stanza with eight lines. This poem consist of no rhyme scheme, it’s a lyric poem. The theme of” Much Madness is divinest sense-“ is what considered sane in one society might be defined as crazy in another.
In the poem, Emily Dickinson used a paradox in the beginning line of the poem. “Much Madness is Divinest Sense-“, this line gave reader question rises in their mind on whether Dickinson is trying to referring anger or insanity in this poem. To complicate matter, Dickinson throw two words at the end of this line to complicate things up. The reader might wonder if Dickinson is serious or if she is poking fun at someone or something. Is she enjoying her madness? Is she using madness to rise above a situation in which she feels uncomfortable or trapped?
Dickinson wrote in the fourth and fifth line of the poem,” Assent- and you are sane-/ Demur – you’re straightway dangerous-“. Dickinson is also correct in pointing out that the majority classifies what is sane and what is not. In any group, rules of conduct are determined by the majority. Deviation from this standard cannot be tolerated if the majority of the group is to "prevail." In some way, those who object must be ostracized or else they will threaten the group's goals. Dickinson also used personification in the poem. In the last two lines of the poem she wrote, “Demur- you’re straightway dangerous-/And handled with a Chain-“ This help the reader to relates how one considered to be good and upright, the society might considered to be dangerous.
