Bio, 2008). These plants have no stem and has anywhere from one to four leaf life structures called thallus (plural = thalli). It can reproduce by flowering and setting seed. When a new thallus has grown large enough and has roots, it then breaks of from the parent plant and grows separately (ETSU Dept. Bio, 2008).
Rainforest in reality have shallow and relatively infertile soil. The reasons behind this soil having these qualities is because heavy rainfall causes important nutrients needed for a fertile environment to be washes away and/or dissolved into the lower layer of the soil (leaching) thus leaving the forest floor infertile. Once leaching has occurred and removed these nutrients, trees become unable to access fertile soil and remain healthy. Many rainforest trees have developed adaptations which allow them to reach down into the lower levels of soil and receive these nutrients. Such adaptation is known as a “Buttress Roots”.
Diet The main food that Koalas eat is eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and low in nutrition. Eucalyptus leaves contain a lot of water so koalas don’t have to drink. The koala’s metabolism rate is also regulated in a way to complement the heat insulation of the fur. The metabolism of the koala is quite slow it is only 74% of other animals’ metabolism rate.
Bottomless coffins enabled good air circulation, helping the body to dry out. Not all of the bodies were mummified, it has been hypothesised that the bodies which were mummified were buried during the winter. The growth of bacteria would have inhibited bacteria growth and declined the rate of decomposition. The most preserved mummies were dressed in winter clothing, supporting this. Some of the corpses were so well preserved that the fine hairs on the skin, lines and eyelashes were intact.
The rings of growth in the lawn are caused by the release of nutrients, specifically nitrogen because of the activity of the fungus living on organic matter in the soil. These organisms are mushroom or “puffball” forming fungi. Some mushrooms or puffballs are very poisonous when eaten and it is important that they are routinely destroyed if small children are likely to be attracted to them. There are three kinds of fairy rings. The first type has no mushrooms just stimulated grass growth revealing the activity of these fungi in soil.
Plants in the understorey and forest floor grow to join the canopy layer when one of the existing trees die and leave a gap of sunlight. The smaller plants then begin collecting the nutrients that allow them to grow and survive. The other plants, that don’t receive sunlight, either die or take advantage of the trees that reach the canopy or emergent layers. They do this by growing around or on the trees (these are called epiphytes) so that they don’t have to grow their own support structure. About 80% of the food we eat came from Rainforests.
What type of bird builds “condos” in the White Namib? ___________________ 10. What area of the Namib is known for having “scrubby grass”? ____________________________ 11. Describe two ways in which plants in this area of the Namib (above) make sure that they get their seeds out.
Arctic foxes also have a thick fur tail which is used for warmth in cold conditions. They furthermore have thick fur lining and a thick pad on their feet, this stops the paws getting cold and there is an increased blood circulation to the feet which stops the fox's paws freezing to the ice. They have shorter legs which spread the body weight making it easier for the animal to not descend in the snow. Furthermore, in the summer the arctic fox has brown colour fur which helps to make the fox indistinguishable when foxhunting in the long grass. This is a good use for camouflage.
By blending themselves into their surroundings, they adequately use ambient resources provided by plants such as trees, flowers or grass. As a result, camouflage makes it possible that insects do not have to waste energy for struggling and time for fleeing so that they are able to use saved time to disguise themselves because they almost have no chance of running faster than their predators. Basically, insects resemble or imitate plants and become inedible to the predators with the help of camouflage. Stick insect is a good example to demonstrate this. They are quite famous for its camouflage.
Anemones Anemone comes from anemos, the Greek word for wind, thus giving Anemone the name wind flower. The genus Anemone consists of 120 species of perennial flowering plants, which grow from tubers. Anemones grow wild in many European countries, in North America, and Japan. Anemones are closely related to Pasque flower (Pulsatilla) and Hepatica (Hepatica); some botanists include both of these genera within the genus Anemone. The Anemone meaning wind flower, which signifies that the wind that blows the petal open will also, eventually, blow the dead petals away; are perennial herbs with an underground rootstock, and radical, more or less deeply cut leaves.
